Energy Policies
A new energy economy is being born and the era of cheap oil is drawing to a close. The world's oil producers are being required to drill deeper in ever more challenging parts of the world. With diminishing oil discoveries and greatly escalating world consumption of fossil fuels, the future is certain to include increased fuel prices, fuel shortages, and increased competition with developing countries.

The US House of Representatives recently voted 220-190 to pass a renewable electricity standard requiring electric utilities to obtain at least 15 percent of their power from a combination of energy efficiency and renewable sources. This is significant, and if enacted it will lead to the creation of many new jobs, a cleaner environment, stronger local economies, and improved national security. The House bill also provides tax incentives for clean, renewable energy. Glarringly absent from this bill however, is a fuel efficiency standard as was included in the Senate energy bill. Congress will work to reconcile these two bill when they reconvene from recess in September. To date, 21 states plus D.C. have enacted their own version of a renewable energy standard or renewable protfolio standard. You can learn more about the various state standards by clicking here. Please contact your representatives and let them know your thought on a national renewable energy standard. Taylor Jenkins
