2007 ENERGY TOUR: Day 20 July 14, 2007Today was an interesting day. We started out this morning in Hadley, Massachusetts. We made some calls to get some biodiesel and headed for Seven Sisters Auto Repair in Hatfield www.sevensistersauto.com. We took all the biodiesel they had available and went to Greenfield. In Greenfield we went to the Solar Store www.usasolarstore.com. This was an interesting store with lots of great information about solar power and renewable energy. They also sell biodiesel. Parking the RV was difficult and we had to park some distance away. It would have been very time and labor intensive to carry heavy five gallon cans of biodiesel to fill up the Energy Aware Express so Mark, the Solar Store owner, told us about the Shell Station in Brattleboro, Vermont that sold B100 from the pump. We had looked at this vendor at www.Biodiesel.org but they listed that they sold only B20. When we got there they did sell B100 from the pump. We were very glad to get this fuel! We were in a hurry because there were some workshops at the Solarfest we wanted to attend and we rushed off. We traveled through beautiful Vermont and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery. Suddenly we approached a covered bridge that was too low for the Energy Aware Express to clear. With some help from the residents we were able to try a different route, however that proved to also be impassable because of road and bridge weight restrictions. We spent the next several hours driving all over a 20 square mile area trying every road and way to get to the Solarfest. We tried every road possible to get there but exceeded height and weight (by several tons) at some point on every road or bridge. We had all been very excited about attending Solarfest 2007 so we felt very motivated to keep trying to get there. At 5:00 pm, when the workshops and vendors were done for the day, we had exhausted every way to get to the fair, to no avail. Feeling very disappointed we decided to start heading west. We visited New Haven, Vermont for dinner and spoke with several people there about our mission. Then we drove west to New York. We will continue our westward journey this week as we make our way toward the other coastline of the United States. |
