2007 ENERGY TOUR: Day 9 July 3, 2007We had a fabulous day today. It started with an interview with Rockford 23 News, the reporter Kristen talked to us about our tour for an evening news report. We appreciate the news coverage because it allows us to share the message of renewable energy with many people. Later today we had a wonderful visit with Swee Sim and Jason Haas, the founders of the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op www.mkebio.org. The grand opening party for the co-op will be at 5:00 pm on Saturday, July 28 at Future Green, 2352 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There will be food, live music, and a biodiesel educational presentation. The event is free and open to the public. The Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op is a member-owned, non-profit corporation and the only provider of B100 (pure biodiesel) in Milwaukee. They are devoted to educating people about the environmental and economic benefits of biodiesel. Membership in the co-op is $125 per year or $20 per year for students, anyone may purchase biodiesel from the co-op and members get fuel at cost. Swee says that the co-op is all about being more green and using more renewable energy. The Future Green store www.futuregreen.net is a retail shop devoted to sustainable living, fair trade, organic and environmentally friendly products. From the fair trade, organically based jewelry, candles, and food products, the beautiful organic fiber clothing, bedding, and linens and the recycled interior decorating supplies, to the solar powered building and solar powered biodiesel pump, Swee is very knowledgeable about being more green and using renewable energy. He has been brewing his own biodiesel for his personal use from waste soy oil for about two years. Jason, who calls himself a biodiesel evangelist, first became aware of biodiesel in 2004 when he came across a biodiesel article in his newspaper. He became an instant "convert" to the benefits of biodiesel. About a year ago Jason and Swee started talking about putting together the co-op and over the last few months it has really started to gain momentum. There are many people attending meetings and bringing their knowledge, manpower, and donations of time, money and equipment to the project. They state that biodiesel interest crosses the lines of political leanings and appeals to many diverse populations. Through the co-op meetings more and more people are coming together that want to help bring about a biodiesel revolution. Both Jason and Swee state that the co-op is not in it for the money, Swee says he is in it to encourage people to use green fuel and help the environment. Jason is in it for the pure love of biodiesel, "it is a freakin' awesome product" he says. He is also concerned with national security and loves that biodiesel is a made in the USA product. Before we left Swee and Jason gave us ten gallons of their commercial grade biodiesel for the Energy Aware Express. We are very grateful for this gift and encourage you to support the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op and your local co-op. We wish the Milwaukee Biodiesel Co-op the best of luck and share their vision of educating the nation about the benefits of biodiesel and renewable energy. |
