2007 ENERGY TOUR: Day 7 July 1, 2007We had a long drive across Nebraska today. We visited some interesting places and saw some interesting things. We noticed a lot of windmills, not the big kind like we saw yesterday, although we did see a few of those, but we saw a lot of little windmills that are used for pumping water. This is a reminder that wind has long been a source of renewable energy! We also did some sightseeing. We visited an original Pony Express stop in Gothenburg, Nebraska. Then we visited a "sod house." This is the type of house many of the prairie pioneers built because of the lack of good wood. They would dig up a chunk of sod from the prairie grass and piece by piece lay them on top of each other (kind of like bricks) to build the house. Then the inside was white washed with lime and water five or six times. The most amazing thing was how cool it was inside the house, even though it was hot outside. I guess that is what good insulation will do! We arrived this evening in Omaha, Nebraska and will continue our journey in the morning. |
