Hydrogen

Hydrogen Hydrogen is a gas that can be combusted like other fuels, or it can be converted to electricity in fuel cells. It only forms water or steam as an exhaust product, with virtually no negative environmental impact. Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe but it must first be produced from other sources like water in a process called electrolysis.

Hydrogen is also the fuel of choice for the new fuel cell engines for vehicles. A fuel cell is a device that is powered by hydrogen and used an electro-chemical process to convert the hydrogen into electricity, water vapor, and heat. The fuel cell is twice as efficient as the conventional internal combustion engine and it is clean. These fuel cells could also be used as stationary units used to generate electricity and heat for buildings.

Hydrogen can come from many sources, including the electrolysis of water or the reformulation of natural gas or gasoline. Any electricity source can electrolyze the water. If the electricity comes from a wind farm, hydropower, solar, or geothermal power source, there would be no carbon emissions or air pollutants.

Iceland already has a plan to convert from fossil fuels to hydrogen use. They are using hydroelectricity to produce the hydrogen. They are currently using a fleet of hydrogen powered buses and have future plans to convert automobiles and even fishing boats to use hydrogen.
